Pryda - Power Drive

The name of this track couldn't describe the song any better. Eric Prydz, the guy that made that track "Call On Me" about 10 years ago? If you don't remember it, its got that video of an aerorobics class of women in tights and one very happy guy. That pretty much sums it up. Yeah this is the same guy, just under his Pryda alter-ego. Let me tell you, this guy is definitely one of the best producers in dance music today! The production quality on his PRYDA album is unbelievable and this track is no different. "This makes me wanna punch a bear through a wall" (As seen on twitter). It's got a dark melodic build-up and then all of a sudden it drops into electro goodness!

DNS Project - Shatter/Gauntlet

Estonian Rene Pais aka DNS Project under Coldharbour recordings released an unbelievable two track EP. I honestly can't pick which one is better. Both are melodic trance masterpieces! Definitely will be listening to these for a long long time.

Maya Jane Coles feat Karin Park - Everything

The first single off her forthcoming album, Comfort. I love this so much. MJC's productions are always slick and this one is no different. "Everything" has one of the sickest basslines I've heard in a long time. Its a very dark yet very groovy deep house track. Bassssssss!!!

Sub Focus feat Alex Clare - Endorphins  

Sub Focus, aka Nick Douwma is back with another sick tune! I seem to enjoy the music this UK DJ makes, even though I'm not a big DnB/dubstep listener. Alex Clare, UK singer/songwriter takes care of the vocals which are very enjoyable. This song also has a video, which is also really cool. Really loving this! Check out the music vid!



Tommy Trash has taken care of the remix with his signature uplifting, festival kinda vibe. Also enjoying this! Good work Tommy!

Oliver - Mechanical EP

Recently discovered these rad guys called Oliver, who released their deput EP 'Mechanical' at the end of January this year. Man these guys make some tight electronic music, groovy and funky, bouncy and fresh, new yet slightly retro, the adjectives I use to describe these tunes are similar to the adjectives I would use to describe the experience of travelling to the future in a Delorean and coming back with nothing but a groove in my bones, a pink Tom & Jerry t-shirt and a pair of Wayfarer sunglasses. These guys not only make some club bangers like MYB (which we posted last month) but also some sumptuous sunset chillers as well as dark moody deep numbers. Bittereinder - Kwaad Naas

Getting local today with South African alternative Afrikaans rap group Bittereinder. I am a bit late with posting this one but give me a break, I only checked it the other day. It's the music video for their latest single off their most recent album Dinkdansmasjien (Think-Dance-Machine). The track is called Kwaad Naas (how South African people pronounce "quite nice") and has a very bouncy crunchy and infectious electro beat, quite lekker if you ask me, but that's because it's produced by beat-wizard Peach Van Pletzen aka Yesterday's Pupil (blogged about in Feb) who makes up one third of Bittereinder. The song also features a rap from none other than lead singer of South African indie band Desmond and the Tutus, Shane Durrant. Love the video, love the track, love the lyrics, love local, kiff my bru's. Tshek it out my chinas:

Kanye West Announcement

Mr West recently tweeted the date June 18th, and in doing so revealed the release date of his next album to the public in rather unspectacular fashion, but nevertheless its exciting news for Kanye fans! It seems that Mr West has kept the production of this album very quiet as June 18th is relatively close. I suppose he wants to keep it's content a secret which is cool and mysterious. But then again, album release dates are "announced" all the time so don't take my (or rather his) word for it. Rumour has it he has worked with the likes of the mighty Daft Punk once again on this album, amongst other guests, exciting! Most often one can always expect great things from the this musical maverick, and let's hope he avoids the mistakes of 2012's supremely average G.O.O.D Music group compilation, Kanye is far better solo without the likes of 2 Chainz and other idiotically-named untalented rappers. UPDATE (20/05/2013):

Kanye has been busy creating hype for his next album this past week and weekend, performing new songs from the album on Saturday Night Live and revealing it's title, Yeezus. Kanye seems to have a serious god-complex these days. Anywho, the always innovative and ever-unpredictable Mr West debuted the single New Slaves by projecting a video for it simultaneously on walls in 66 different locations around the US and other places in the world. It seems that June 18th is not such an unbelievable release date after all! Also, the album artwork for Yeezus has also been revealed, no comment from me.

Sweat X - EbonyIvroyTron

I was bumping this track basically the whole year last year and have been meaning to post it ever since this blog started. One of my favourite artists on the South African music scene, Spoek Mathambo, was once in a two-man electro group with producer Markus Wormstorm (of Max Normal/Real Estate Agents/other obscure South African music projects fame) back in 2007 before he formed Playdoe with Sibot and before he made his career as a solo artist. But enough with the history lesson, back to the track.

One review of the EP from which this track comes said the following:
“Sweat X are the last word in the whole hip-house/new rave/electro-booty funk thing that’s so new it hasn’t even happened yet.” - Vice

“Cape Town’s hyperactive, gutter-mouthed, ‘African electro’ duo, Sweat X... armed with a bunch of ‘future primitive’ rave funk, glitchy melodies and club-friendly glam hip-house, have arrived at exactly the right time.”  - Time Out

Based on those two reviews alone, you can already catch the vibe, self-described Afro-Futurists Sweat X never released a lot of music, but man it was some funky shit. The song in question however was something fierce, a glitchy sweaty house number with Mathambo's signature silky sexual raps and African lady vocals taunting us on the dancefloor keep us grooving until the final minute where the beat drops into a sensual head-bumping booty shaking boom in the room.

Wavves

Remember a while back when we posted a quirky little number about my hero Dave Grohl? Well I did a little investigation afterwards and discovered that Wavves has a lot of other cool songs too! I have really gotten into this band recently and funnily enough actually discovered them through their collaboration with Big Boi on his latest album Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumours.

They have a really cool sound, a mix of sixties surfer rock (think Beach Boys), punk, psychadelia and a little bit of grunge thrown in too (think Nirvana). I'm told that they have a similar sound to a band called The Drums too. Anyways, my favourite thing about this band is that their music is kind of paradoxical, in that the music itself has a really happy sometimes hippy sometimes ubpeat punk vibe to it, but the lyrics are really dark, depressing and negative in an "everything is stupid, life sucks" kinda way. It's a combination that I find really interesting and is part of the reason I'm digging Wavves so much right now.

They have just released their new album Afraid of Heights too, which is also exciting. Below is a selection of some of my favourite Wavves tunes. But like, whatever man, who cares.

The moment that all Cudder fans have been waiting for has arrived! The release of Kid Cudi's 3rd album (excluding his alt-rock side project WZRD). Much like his second album Man On The Moon II, I found it somewhat bizzare and difficult to listen to the first time, but after multiple listens it really starts to grow on you like moss grows on a rock in a moist jungle.

This time around it is evident that the Kid has been hanging with producers and bands like MGMT and Ratatat because he now produced the album himself. Although he is new to the production scheme of things, it doesnt really show, as he manages to make some quality beats. Fans would be delighted to hear that he is clearly back on drugs again, as can be heard in the experimentality of sounds and of course the multiple references to dropping acid and such in the lyrics. Other topics covered lyrically include how much the Wizard doesnt care about what the haters say, how out of his mind he is, how much he loves his fam, friends and fans, the struggles of fame, fortune and loneliness, and of course having a good time with the bitches (naturally).

The overall sound of the album is relatively dark and futuristic, but as I mentioned earlier he really has an interesting sonic style as a producer, an amalgamation of his influences from psychadellic alternative rock to classic hip hop, with some spacey samples and a selection of well chosen guest features, and a couple of instrumental beats thrown in too, really cool in the author's opinion. People always seem to complain that he will never be able to top his first hit album with it's more easily accessible sounds and catchy melodies and hooks, but you have to admire that the Cudder is always experimenting with new sounds and styles, always coming up with something new and unique. That is what makes Kid Cudi one of the freshest names in modern hip hop and that won't change.

My top tracks from the album include the King Chip collaboration Just What I Am (blogged about in Febuary), King Wizard, Brothers featuring King Chip & A$AP Rocky, New York City Rage Fest, Beez featuring RZA from Wu-Tang Clan, Immortal, Burn Baby Burn and finally Afterwards (Bring Yo Friends) featuring King Chip and (strangely) Michael Bolton. The latter song for me is something really special and strange, with a duration of 9 minutes, it is an outer space after party with an wicked beat that progresses and transports you to the strange planet that Mr Mescudi resides on. At first the Michael Bolton vocals seem really weird, I mean, it's friggin Michael Bolton, but when you forget who it is you realise that they sound perfect on the track.

Overall the Cudder has managed to impress once again with an impressive, innovative, experimental and (appropriately) dope album. Definitely worth a listen for any self-respecting Kid Cudi fan.
